Religious liberty protects us all.
That was the response of Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz to one person’s question about how his rights as a married gay man would be protected in the light of religious liberty laws being enacted in several states.
New Yorker and lifelong Republican Todd Cologne threw the question out to the Texas senator on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on the day before the Empire State’s primary election.
“Religious liberty is something that protects everyone,” Cruz told Cologne. As an example of its importance, he noted that it’s the first phrase in the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights.
“We have a right to live according to our faith, according to our conscience,” he continued. “Freedom ultimately protects each and every one of us. And we shouldn’t have the right to force others to knuckle under and give up their faith and give up their belief.”
