Trial began Monday over a student who was beaten by his classmates for being white.
Then-high school student Giovanni Micheli, who is white, was repeatedly beaten and harassed by blacks and Hispanics who made up the majority of the student body of Brentwood High School on New York’s Long Island, according to The New York Post.
Those beatings became the basis for a lawsuit that opened Monday against the Brentwood School District, alleging that although school officials were informed of the beatings and harassment, they did nothing to remedy the situation.
Instead of punishing the wrong-doers, he was told to either “project more self-confidence” or leave the school altogether.
“Giovanni was a minority because he was Caucasian,” attorney Wayne Schaefer said in his opening statement. “This case is about discrimination against a minority student … Our claim is that there was deliberate indifference because he was a Caucasian student complaining in a district where Caucasians are a minority.”
The Post reported:
After his parents complained, administrators eventually removed Micheli from the campus in favor of home tutoring, according to Schaefer.
Officials later turned down the family’s request to have the increasingly depressed and withdrawn student moved to another district.
“If we do that for him, we would have to do that for all the white children,” the parents were told, according to Schaefer.
Counsel for the school district claimed that Micheli had never provided sufficient information about his tormenters to identify them.
But whatever the outcome, it could be considered a vision of things to come.
On the same day lawyers were delivering their opening statements in the Micheli case, a new Gallup poll was published and indicated that 35 percent of Americans worry about race relations “a great deal,” a figure that has more than doubled in the past two years.
It’s also the highest percentage of worried poll respondents since Gallup began asking the question 15 years ago.
Whether you’re talking Black Lives Matter to the exclusion of all others or the left’s goal of diversity (except for whites), it’s clear that race relations have fallen.
The Micheli case also illustrates that we’re moving further away from the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s goal of a color-blind society.
And the more color-conscious we become, the more race relations disintegrate.
