Fox News host Bill O’Reilly argued that the “entire criminal justice system is now being branded as racist and oppressive” on his program Monday.
At the top of his talking points memo on “The O’Reilly Factor,” O’Reilly turned a clip of a heated discussion between former President Bill Clinton and Black Lives Matter protesters, notable as Clinton signed major crime legislation in 1994.
“I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out onto the streets to murder other African-American children, maybe you thought they were good citizens,” Clinton said at a rally last week for his wife Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner. “[Hillary] didn’t.”
“Mr. Clinton’s absolutely correct,” O’Reilly said. “The vicious drug war resulted in millions, millions of Americans being harmed. Dope pushers and gang members should be incarcerated.”
O’Reilly noted that the former president might have “buckled” under pressure from his own party. In a second clip, Clinton said he “almost” wanted to apologize for the exchange and “use it as an example for the danger threatening our country.”
O’Reilly later brought up the following points:
“According to FBI data, from 1976 to 1995, black Americans were identified by police as committing more than half of the homicides in the U.S.A.”
“The black community is just 13 percent of the entire population.”
“So what’s the beef?,” O’Reilly asked, “If black Americans are committing crimes out of proportion to other ethnic groups, why is there a racial component to their presence in prison?”
“Yet the entire criminal justice system is now being branded as racist and oppressive. Disgraceful.”
