FBI Director James Comey explained the resoning behind his practice of placing a piece of tape over the webcam of his computer.
The bureau chief discussed a variety of subjects centered on privacy and encryption at a Kenyon College speech in Gambier, Ohio Wednesday. This was on the heels of the dispute between the agency and Apple Computer, where the company refused to unlock the iPhone belonging to the San Bernardino terrorists.
After the FBI eventually unlocked the iPhone using an outside contractor Apple wanted to know how they did it.
His comment about the tape was in reply to a question on the use of technology to spy on others.
“I saw something in the news, so I copied it. I put a piece of tape — I have obviously a laptop, personal laptop — I put a piece of tape over the camera,” Comey replied at about the 1:34:45 mark. “Because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.”

At least one thought Comey paranoid.
@npralltech @csoghoian I thought the police profile weeded out the #paranoiacs with all that rigorous ‘how to pass a lie detector’ training?

But oddly, a person who describes himself as one who fights surveillance thought Comey’s practice shameful.
FBI Director Comey has created a “warrant-proof webcam” that will thwart lawful surveillance should he ever be investigated. Shame on him.
