Charles Krauthammer observed that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has become “extremely defensive” in light of the “New York values” comment the Republican presidential contender made in January.
Speaking on the Fox News program “Special Report” Thursday, Krauthammer commented on the boost that the Donald Trump campaign received from the news that former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani will be voting for him in the Empire State primary.
“With Giuliani you get the feeling that he’s sort of sincere in this and he’s relatively unreserved,” Krauthammer said. “He is a folk hero in New York, was at the time a folk hero in the country and I think that’s gonna help to soften the image for Trump.”
The conservative commentator also noted that Cruz has not been able to rebound from his “New York values” remark, something the Texas senator said about Trump in January in an effort to win votes in the first caucus of this presidential election year.
The other thing is that Cruz is really, extremely defensive. He doesn’t have a chance to talk about his issues in New York. He’s gotta defend the ‘New York values’ stuff, which was an enormous mistake. It didn’t really help him in Iowa. He could’ve done it without that phrase. And now how does he defend it? He can’t. Because he’s talking only about that, I think his numbers are gonna stay very low here.
A Monmouth University poll conducted between April 3-5 among 302 likely New York Republican voters shows Trump leading decisively with 52 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich comes in second with 25 percent, while Cruz is third with 17 percent. The poll has a margin of error of 5.6 percent.
