Parents of studentsĀ at a Texas elementary school are no longer allowed to set foot on its campus when they pick up their children.
Prior to the decision, parents at Bear Branch Elementary School in Magnolia, Texas, were able to walk onto the schoolās property to pick up their children. Now, theyāre resigned to sending their kids home on the bus or waiting in their vehicles off campus, which can be timely, to get their kids home from school,Ā KPRCĀ reported.Ā
āPeople start lining up here about 2:30 p.m. for a 3:25 p.m. dismissal,ā parent Jeff Wendinger said.
āIt’s a ridiculous situation for everyone,ā added parent Jackie McConnell. āI got here shortly after 2 p.m.ā
KRIV reported that parents are pulling their students out of the school as a result of the new policy. One of those parents is Wendy Jarman, who had to drive to the school to pick up her child despite living withinĀ walking distance of Bear Branch Elementary.
āSheās threatening to arrest people,ā Jarman said of the schoolās principal, Holly Ray. āThis has happened to many parents. They have been cited. They have been threatened, if they step one foot on school property, they will be arrested and charged with who knows what.ā
Jarman isnāt exaggerating. The school has arranged for Montgomery County Constables to help enforce the new policy.
Frank Young pulled his children out of the school and hadĀ received one of those citations Jarman alluded to.
āMrs. Rayās policy is implying that a parent doesnāt have the ability or capability to decide what is safest for their children and that the school district does,ā Young said. āThe most toxic thing we can do for our kids is not fight for truth and justice.ā
The school released a statement supporting Mrs. Ray and the new policy despite disapproval by manyĀ parents and school staff.Ā
