During a town hall in Madison, Wisconsin, Sen. Ted Cruz elicited thundering applause from what had been a mostly silent audience when he said liberals lack the right to silence people of faith.
Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who moderated the event on the night before the Wisconsin presidential primary, asked Cruz to explain his statement that politicians shouldn’t “wear their faith on their sleeve” in light of his frequent appeals to faith.
The Texas Republican explained that while it’s not the role of the president to be “pastor in chief” or to impose his beliefs on others, it’s also not permitted for non-believers to silence people of faith.
“You have the right not to participate. But you don’t have the right to silence everybody else,” Cruz said, eliciting a loud round of applause.
“The First Amendment protects the religious liberty of Christians, of Jews, of Muslims, of atheists. Every one of us, we have a right to seek out and worship God, to live according to our own faith and conscience,” he explained.
“The left loves to preach tolerance and diversity. There is nothing so intolerant as a leftist who says, ‘Don’t you dare say Jesus around me. I will not tolerate the name of Jesus,’” Cruz said, bringing another thunderous round of applause.
Wisconsin is a winner-take-all primary state, with 42 Republican and 96 Democratic delegates up for grabs when voters go to the polls Tuesday.
Last week, most polls showed Cruz having a comfortable 10-point lead in the Badger State. A CBS poll that came out over the weekend indicated that his lead had dropped to five points.
