She was visibly distraught — her husband had died the night before.
Customers waiting in line at a Vancouver, Washington, drive-through coffee shop were treated to the powerful and unexpected sight of baristas leaning out the window to hold a customer’s hand and offer her prayers.
When baristas Pierce Dunn and Evan Freeman were first hired at Dutch Bros. Coffee, they were taught to connect to the customers in addition to learning how to make every fancy coffee drink imaginable.
And when a co-worker noticed the next customer was in tears, they sprang into action, according to Oregon’s KPTV Fox 12 News.
“She’s like, ‘She’s just having a really bad day. Her husband passed.’ And as soon as she said that, I was like, ‘There’s nothing more you need to say. We got this. We’re going to do what we do every time we get someone who’s in pain or hurt. We’re going to give them our love,'” Freeman told the station.
They got her a free drink, took her hand, bowed their heads and prayed.
“So basically, I just said, like, you know I really want her to have peace over the situation … help the mourning of her and her family,” said Dunn.
But neither was aware of how moved the person next in line was by the sight. Barbara Danner snapped a photo and posted it on the Dutch Bros. Facebook page — where it took off.

The post caught the attention of store owner Jessica Chudek.
“I thought, ‘That’s great our company does that and we can show love out the window that way.’ I started studying it a little more and I said, ‘Wait, that’s Evan and Pierce! That’s my stand, those are my kids!’ So it just brought me to tears right then,” she told the station.
