How this coach used veterans to teach his team to respect national anthem

In a lesson they will likely never forget, a college basketball team learned who the real stars are when their coach taught them about respect.

Virginia Tech basketball coach Buzz Williams was apparently not happy with the Hokies’ behavior during the national anthem and did more than lecture them. He arranged for a real life lesson in patriotism as he brought the players face-to-face with a group of veterans at the stadium.

The video, posted by Changing the Game Project, has been viewed over six million times.

“We didn’t earn those chairs,” Williams told the men’s team. “Your talent didn’t earn those chairs. How tall you are, how fast you run, and how well you shoot didn’t earn those chairs. Me drawing up a play, me recruiting real hard, me working really hard, I didn’t earn those chairs.”

“These guys,” he continued, pointing to the line of veterans in uniform,  “when they were your age interrupted their life, they paused their education, they changed their career, and they gave their life for those chairs.”

The coach then instructed the team on the respectful way to stand and behave during the national anthem.

“Don’t you wish all college coaches would do this?” said the Project’s Facebook page.  “In a few years, there would a re-birth of patriotism on college campuses!”
