In appreciation for comments Sen. Bernie Sanders made at the CNN Democratic presidential debate Sunday, the National Rifle Association showed its support for the independent Vermont senator.
The day following the debate, the NRA tweeted that Sanders was “spot on” for his refusal to support legislation that would hold gun manufacturers liable for shootings. It tweeted:

Supporters of the self-described Democratic socialist were less-than-thrilled.
Moderator Anderson Cooper brought up the issue, noting that families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting were suing Remington Arms, the manufacturer of the AR-15 carbine the shooter used in the attack.
Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton agreed with a shooting victim’s right to sue a manufacturer; Sanders was against it.
“If that is the point, I have to tell you I disagree. I disagree because you hold people — in terms of this liability thing, where you hold manufacturers’ liable is if they understand that they’re selling guns into an area that — it’s getting into the hands of criminals, of course, they should be held liable,” Sanders said.
“But if they are selling a product to a person who buys it legally, what you’re really talking about is ending gun manufacturing in America. I don’t agree with that.”
Here’s the exchange that led to the NRA’s kudos:
Second Amendment supporters were delighted, even if the Vermont senator came upon his burst of logic accidentally.

Sanders supporters weren’t quite feeling the Bern, however.
@NRA This, alongside so many other things, has honestly killed my support for Bernie Sanders.

And one person couldn’t help noticing what wasn’t discussed at the debate.
