A city’s assault on the First Amendment became the subject of a lawsuit.
An Atlanta, Georgia, fire chief filed a wrongful termination lawsuit after he lost his job for publishing a self-help book based on his Christian faith.
The city of Atlanta claims former fire chief Kelvin Cochran was fired for not getting prior approval to publish his book, referring to it as “outside employment,” and Cochran and his attorney made their case to “Fox & Friends” host Ainsley Earhardt.
“What [the city of Atlanta] is trying to say is that no citizen has a right to engage in free speech about their own faith outside of work time unless they get permission from the government first,” David Cortman, Cochran’s lawyer, told Earhardt. “And the only permission slip that the chief needs is the First Amendment.”
The former fire chief put in that “In our Constitution, Americans are guaranteed the freedoms to express their thoughts and beliefs without fear of any adverse consequences.”
It all comes down to tolerance, and he added, “Tolerance is a two-way street.”
