Trump dumps CPAC just before anticipated speech; fallout fast and fierce

If Donald Trump wants to build a bridge with conservative voters, this is not the way to do it.

The Republican presidential front-runner has backed out of his appearance at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) event in Washington, D.C.

CPAC event organizers made the announcement just before noon on Twitter.

The Trump campaign issued a statement moments later confirming his absence.

“Mr. Trump would like to thank Matt Schlapp and all of the executives at CPAC and looks forward to returning to next year, hopefully as president of the United States,” the statement read.

The announcement came less than 24 hours after it was discovered that a walkout of more than 1,000 people was planned for Trump’s speaking engagement.

Response to the news was mixed on social media.
