Chick-fil-A restaurants are serious about family time at the dinner table.
In locations around the country, the restaurant chain is inviting diners to take part in their “Family Challenge:” putting away cell phones during mealtime and earning free ice cream in return.
“Parents and even couples get distracted by their phone calls and distracted by their phones, playing on phones,” Cheri Shilling, Chick-fil-A marketing director in Greenville, S.C., told WHNS-TV. “I’ve seen people sit and not even speak to each other because they’re on their phones.”
Each restaurant can choose whether it participates in the clever challenge, which directs guests to temporarily place their phones in a box marked “Cell Phone Coop.” Diners are then encouraged to “Enjoy your Chick-fil-A meal and each other distraction free!” Upon completing the challenge, diners receive a free ice cream.
One mom said it was great to be able to talk with her two boys. “It went well, thankfully we don’t use phones a whole lot during our meals but it was great, we didn’t even miss it,” said Delacey Riley.
