A Democratic congresswoman told Al Sharpton Sunday that people want to see an “African-American voice” on the Supreme Court to replace that of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, but added that Clarence Thomas, the court’s lone black justice, doesn’t count.
“I think many people would like to see an African-American on the Supreme Court,” Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif. told Sharpton.
“We don’t really need to go into Clarence Thomas’ background or his behavior on the court, but I think to have an African-American voice that has definitely not been there since Thurgood Marshall would really be an incredible contribution to our country.”
Later into the interview, Sharpton observed that although Thomas is black, he’s the wrong kind of black.
“I might note neither you or I is suggesting Clarence Thomas is not African-American,” he said. “We just may [disagree] with how he has used his–”
“It’s an African-American voice,” Bass said.
“That’s right, I just wanted to clarify that,” Sharpton said.
Marshall was the high court’s first African-American justice, who compiled a progressive record on the bench after his appointment by Lyndon Johnson.
Thomas, however, was appointed by George H.W. Bush and is seen as one of the court’s most conservative justices.
