‘I went by the law’: Melania Trump defends her status as an immigrant

In a rare interview, Melania Trump met with MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski to discuss a wide range of topics including her status as an immigrant.

On “Morning Joe” on Wednesday, Brzezinski presented the GOP candidate’s wife with a list of names used to describe Donald Trump and asked if his stance on Mexico could be seen as insulting.

“No, I don’t feel he insulted the Mexicans,” she replied. “He said illegal immigrants. He didn’t talk about everybody. He talked about illegal immigrants.” She added that although the media initially bashed him, their opinions changed as “he opened conversation that nobody did.”

But, Brzezinski noted, Trump’s rhetoric must upset his wife who was born in Slovenia and came to the U.S. as an immigrant.

“Do you ever think he’s gone too far?” Brzezinski asked.

“I follow the law. I follow the law the way it’s supposed to be,” the former model stated simply.  “I never thought to stay here without papers,” she said, describing the steps of renewing her visa, applying for a green card and then for U.S. citizenship, which she received in 2006.

“So I went by the system. I went by the law and you should do that. You should not just say, okay, let me just stay here and whatever happens happens,” she said.
