Former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich went on “Fox & Friends” Monday and took the show’s hosts to task for inventing the Donald Trump presidential candidacy.
At about the 3:05 mark into the interview, co-host Brian Kilmeade noted that Trump is running away with the election even though he’s spending the least amount of money.
“That’s because of you guys,” the former House speaker said.
“Donald Trump gets up in the morning, tweets to the entire planet at no cost, picks up the phone, calls you, has a great conversation for about eight minutes, which would have cost him a ton in commercial money, and meanwhile his opponents are all out there trying to raise the money to run an ad. Nobody believes the ad.”
Kilmeade argued that during the 2012 presidential season, then-GOP candidate Mitt Romney wouldn’t appear on their show at all for three months, and in the current season, neither Hillary Clinton nor Jeb Bush made appearances for months.
“Donald Trump from day-one made himself available to big and small and it paid off.” he said.
Co-host Steve Doocy observed that Trump has “invented scenarios where suddenly he gets this free media.”
But Gingrich wasn’t buying what the hosts were selling.
“Look, you could say that Trump is the candidate ‘Fox & Friends’ invented. He was on your show I think more than any other show,” he said. “It was always a happy, positive conversation.”
