After a photo created a stir on the internet over the weekend, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety revoked a personalized license plate deemed offensive and issued an apology.
“This personalized license plate should never have been issued; it is offensive and distasteful,” a statement from the department said Monday. “The Department of Public Safety apologizes for this error.”

The plate, which reads “FMUSLMS,” was issued last June and was originally seen on a Chevrolet truck near the city of St. Cloud, WCCO-TV reported. A photo was shared on Facebook, and eventually, the news reached the governor’s office.
“I am appalled that this license plate was issued by the State of Minnesota,” Governor Mark Dayton said in a statement. “It is offensive, and the person who requested it should be ashamed. That prejudice has no place in Minnesota.”
Personalized license plates may be ordered for an additional fee in Minnesota where the application reads: “A personalized plate that offends public morals or decency may not be issued.”
The governor has ordered the department to review the process for ordering vanity plates in an effort to avoid something like this happening again.
