A New York man is being remembered as a hero after he died Friday rescuing his fiancée and his three children from a blazing house fire.
After leading all but his middle child out to safety, Demetrius Johnson, 24, rushed back into the inferno to bring out the three-year-old son.
Johnson collapsed inside the Buffalo home; firefighters responding to the scene found and rescued the boy and retrieved Johnson’s lifeless body.
“My brother died a hero, that’s all there was to it,” William Johnson Jr., Demetrius’ brother, told local media, according to the New York Daily News. “He was an angel. He pulled his family out of there, but he couldn’t save himself.”
Johnson was the first to detect the fire, the Daily News reported.
He woke up his fiancée Tempest Thomas — whom he proposed to just days earlier on Valentine’s Day — and his three kids: 8-year-old Treasure Brighon, 3-year-old Demetrius Johnson and 1-year-old Demaris Johnson.
The 24-year-old dad carried out his badly burned daughter and made sure Thomas and Demaris, who were both unharmed, got out, too. Outside the flaming two-family home, the couple realized their 3-year-old was still inside.
“Tempest told Demetrius, ‘Don’t go back in there, it’s too bad,’” William Johnson told local media. “My brother said, ‘I’m not going to let my son die.’
So he broke a window and crawled back into the house in search of his son.
“He died doing everything he could do to rescue his family,” his brother said.
