A city council meeting in southwestern Texas ended with the mayor being arrested and hauled away in handcuffs Tuesday.
Crystal City Mayor Ricardo Lopez was arrested forĀ “inciting a riot” during a recess at the meeting, according to The San Antonio Express-News. But things got worse for the mayor once he arrived at the county jail, as deputies discovered he was carrying a controlled substance.
āHe brought in a controlled substance. I believe it was a prescribed medication that wasnāt in the right container. Maybe a Vicodin. Itās a felony,ā saidĀ Sheriff Eusevio Salinas.
The mayor also faces charges of resisting arrest and hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct, the Express-News reported, not to mention the federal indictment against him on charges of corruption.
The commotion at Tuesday’s meeting began when the council discussedĀ a recall election and resignations ofĀ Lopez and other council members who were indicted on charges of corruption just weeks ago. Lopez was returning to the recessed meeting with documentation to back his position when he reportedly ended upĀ exchanging pushes and shoves withĀ a woman.
“He was inciting a riot,” said city Police Chief Jesus Lopez, who is not related. The chiefĀ warned Lopez that he would be arrested if he did not calm down, but the mayor allegedly charged out of the building. With many of the over 100 onlookers cheering and television cameras rolling,Ā the mayor was handcuffed and put in a police car.
“I think the whole town has gone crazy,” said former municipal Judge Dora Paloma. “This has never happened before.”
Lopez,Ā along with former council member Gilbert Urrabazo and current council members Rogelio Mata and Roel Mata, face federal corruption charges stemming from a raid earlier this month. The council meeting was rescheduled for Wednesday, but Lopez remains in jail without bond at this time, reported the Express-News.
