Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) has threatened that if the Obama administration does not release more information on the detention of 10 American sailors in Iran in January, he will subpoena the sailors in an effort to get answers.
The subpoena is an option “I do not want to exercise,” McCain told reporters, according to the Washington Examiner. But that is what he intends to do if the administration does not release its findings from an investigation by March 1.
Obama officials have blamed a navigational problem as the reason two Navy patrol boats wandered into Iranian waters on January 12. The sailors were arrested by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and held overnight.
Their quick release was touted as effective diplomacy in negotiations between Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, as the incident played out days before the Iran nuclear deal went into effect. Kerry thanked Iran for its cooperation and that the Navy personnel were “well taken care of,” while Iran followed up by mocking the U.S. in parades and awarding those who arrested the American sailors.
McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, and other Republicans have blasted Kerry’s statements and are demanding more details on the sailors’ detention.
