Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz claimed the Republican Party’s choice of South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to deliver the GOP response to President Obama’s State of the Union address demonstrated the party’s lack of diversity.
Oops! Has she looked at the Democratic lineup of presidential candidates lately?
“It’s pretty clear that Nikki Haley is being chosen because the Republican Party has a diversity problem,” Wasserman Schultz, who’s also a Florida congresswoman said in a conference call, according to The Hill, which reported:
Haley, who was born in South Carolina, is the daughter of immigrants from India. She will be delivering the GOP’s official response to President Obama’s final State of the Union Tuesday night.
The GOP had a response to the DNC chair’s statement — given its own lineup of presidential candidates.
“Like most things Debbie Wasserman Schultz says, that’s just ridiculous,” said RNC spokesman Michael Short.
“No one disputes the fact Republicans have the most diverse presidential field in the history of either party, though the Democrats do have us beat when it comes to fielding self-described socialists and candidates under FBI investigation.”
“Old white people” could also be added to the list, a fact apparently not lost on Wasserman Schultz. At the Iowa Black and Brown Forum Monday, which focused on minority issues, the three candidates — former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley — didn’t appear on the stage together for photographs or video footage.
Des Moines Register chief politics reporter Jennifer Jacobs tweeted:
News outlets won’t have photo/footage of the 3 Dems together at Iowa Black & Brown – DNC prohibited them on stage together even for pic.

Social media’s response to Wasserman Schultz was brutal.
Odd comment to make from the party with geriatric white people battling for its presidential nomination. https://t.co/r8RmAEo8jj

@PatrickASweeney @DWStweets @seanspicer DWS was given one drum to bang, and that’s all she knows how to do… even if no one is listening.

@MB15MB @DWStweets Maybe THAT is what she means: GOP doesn’t have ANYONE under investigation running.

@PragueArtist DWS is batshit crazy.

Wasserman Schultz proves once again that she’s the gal who just can’t help it — she has to make outrageous statements. Don’t be surprised if tomorrow she either claims she never said that, or that her statement was taken out of context.
