At Thursday evening’s “town hall” on gun violence, President Barack Obama slammed opponents of his executive actions on gun control as conspiracy theorists and claimed that being distrustful of higher authority is “in our DNA.”
“This notion of a conspiracy out there and it gets wrapped up in concerns about the federal government,” he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper who was hosting the event. “Now, there’s a long history of them. That’s in our DNA. The United States was born suspicious of some distant authority.”
America was born out of suspicion of some distant authority? It sounds like the President was referring to the Revolutionary War. And if so, was he suggesting the fight for independence was “born” from a conspiracy theory?
It seems Obama slipped in a subjective history lesson, perhaps in an attempt to make the argument that his skeptics are all just pre-programmed to be “paranoid” about oh-so-wise tyrants like himself.
Cooper glossed over it, but at least, stuck to his guns on the notion that Americans have legitimate concerns about executive overreach when it comes their God-given rights.
“But let me just jump in. Is it fair to call it a conspiracy? There’s a lot of people believe it deeply, they just don’t trust you.”
Obama doubled down.
“I’m sorry, Cooper, yes, it is fair to call it a conspiracy,” Obama countered. “What are you saying? Are you suggesting that the notion that we are creating a plot to take everybody’s guns away so that we can impose Marshall Law is a conspiracy, it is a conspiracy. I would hope you would agree with that. Is that controversial? Except on some website around the country.”
And people called Nixon paranoid? Sounds like Obama’s the paranoid one here — not the American people.
