Developing: Philly officer ambushed, shot multiple times; suspect says he did it ‘in name of Islam’

A suspect who ambushed and shot a Philadelphia police officer execution style, multiple times, at point blank range late Thursday night said he did it in the name of Islam, according to local reports.

Chilling footage of the scene taken by a security camera show the gunman walking up to Officer Jesse Hartnett’s squad and firing a more than a dozen rounds into the vehicle’s driver’s side window, the New York Daily News reported.

“Shots fired! I’m shot! I’m bleeding heavily!” Hartnett yelled after the attack, according to police radio.

Police have confirmed that the gun used in the attack was a stolen police firearm. It had been missing since 2013.

Despite being hit multiple times, shattering a bone in his arm, and sustaining nerve damage, Hartnett, 33, a five-year veteran on the force, was able to make it out the passenger side of his car to return fire.

“He’s OK. He’s going to be OK,” the officer’s aunt, Cynthia Hartnett, told the Daily News Friday.

His assailant, whose name has not been released, was struck by Hartnett and later apprehended.

The Daily News reported:

“Jesse you’re a super hero,” his sister-in-law Ashley Hartnett wrote in a Friday morning Facebook post announcing that the cop was out of surgery. “My brother in law, a police officer in West Philadelphia, was shot at 13 times point blank while sitting in his patrol car at a red light last night … But it’s harder than that to take down a Hartnett.”

The 30-year-old suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody shortly after the 11:30 p.m. ambush, where he confessed to the attack, saying he committed it in the name of Islam,

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross described the video of the attack as  “absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.”

“This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming. It’s amazing he’s alive,” Ross, who was sworn in as commissioner Tuesday, Ross told the Philadelphia CBS affiliate.
