Republican presidential contender Donald Trump doubled down on the appropriateness of footage used in his first TV campaign ad, which earned a “Pants on Fire” designation from PolitiFact.
While a voice-over in the clip says that Trump will “stop illegal immigration by building a wall on our southern border that Mexico will pay for,” a hoard of people in Morocco is depicted.
Trump’s campaign replied Monday that PolitiFact missed the point of the ad’s message and there was nothing wrong with the scene they used — it was only supposed to be representative.
Trump appeared Monday on Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” where at about the 3:45 mark host Bill O’Reilly pressed the candidate on the issue.
“It’s just a display of what our country is going to look like,” Trump replied. “We’re like a third world country — we’re a dumping ground.”
Trump said it was irrelevant when O’Reilly asked if the ad wasn’t misleading.
“They could have picked something else,” he said. “We could have picked plenty of footage, that I can tell you.”
The two also discussed unrest in the Middle East and the advisability of an interview Trump had given to Esquire magazine.
