Because Detroiters are taking his advice by arming themselves, the city’s police chief knows that an attack like the one Paris saw on November 13 could never happen in the Motor City.
Since Chief James Craig took office less than two years ago, he’s been preaching the mantra that an armed citizenry is a safe citizenry.
By the time officers can respond to a 911 call, it will probably be too late.
And with Islamic State extremists reportedly already in the country, ready to wage world-wide jihad, the danger is intensified.
“A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug,” Craig said, according to The Detroit News. “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”
And Craig enjoys the support of nearby Oakland University criminal justice professor Daniel Kennedy.
We don’t have laboratories where we can test these theories, but there is something to the argument that terrorists want a high body count — and if they can only shoot a few people before they’re taken out themselves, it wouldn’t have the kind of impact they want.

Craig also made reference to Washington, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier’s recent appearance on “60 Minutes,” where she was asked what to do when calling 911 isn’t enough.
“If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there,” she told Anderson Cooper.
Nonetheless, Washington, D.C. is often criticized for having some of the most stringent gun control laws in the country.
For whatever it’s worth, Detroit is within spitting distance of both Dearborn and Hamtramck. Dearborn houses the largest Islamic center in North America, and Hamtramck was the first city in the United States to have a Muslim-majority population.
