Declaring that she would “give God the glory,” the Kentucky county clerk jailed for six days for her opposition to gay marriage walked out a free woman Tuesday, and her lawyer told reporters she had no plans to violate her conscience in performing her duties.
Flanked by attorney Mat Staver and former Arkansas Gov. and Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, Kim Davis walked out of the Carter County Detention Center, where she had been held on contempt of court charges over her refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in Rowan County, Kentucky.
“I just want to give god the Glory, His people have rallied. And you are a strong people!” Davis said in a short but emotional speech to supporters. “We serve a living God, Who knows exactly where each and every one of us is at.
“Just keep on pressing. Don’t let down, because He is here! … I love you guys, thank you so much.”
In her absence, her deputies have been issuing marriage licenses on her behalf in Rowan County, and part of the District Judge David Bunning’s order releasing Davis from custody is that she not interfere with gay marriage licenses being issued.
Davis, who holds the elected office as a Democrat, is expected to return to work Wednesday.
Davis’ case has become a national issue, as Christians and supporters of traditional marriage maintain she is being singled out for remaining faithful to her beliefs in the face of a government unwilling to make accommodations for her fellow believers in the wake of June’s Supreme Court decision making gay marriage the law of the land in the United States.
Huckabee told the crowd of Davis supporters the battle was joined between the government and people of faith.
“We gather here today to say we will not surrender to the tyranny of one branch of government,” he said.
