A defiant Florida lawman has no intentions of buckling to the attempted bullying of the perpetually offended atheists at the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
After placing “In God We Trust” on his agency’s patrol cars, Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson received a letter from the atheist group calling on him to rescind the decision, according to Northwest Florida Daily News.
“It is inappropriate for the Sheriff’s Office to display ‘In God We Trust’ on county property,” wrote FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor. “Statements about a god have no place on sheriff cars. Elected officials should not use their government position and government property to promote their religious views.”
Adkinson not only answered no, he effectively said, hell no.
“If the Freedom From Religion Foundation wishes us to take them off our vehicles I suggest that they get a judge’s order or a new Sheriff,” the sheriff boldly declared in a response letter, the Daily News reported.
He told the organization that he sees “absolutely no conflict in this matter,” and proceeded to give them a brief history lesson.
“You are obviously unaware that ‘In God We Trust’ is the state motto of the state of Florida, and has been since 1886,” Adkinson wrote. “Additionally it is the motto of the United States.”
Adkinson concluded by saying he is “unwilling to compromise on the issue” being driven by the contempt of a few.
“The disdain of a small minority should never, absent legitimate grievance, take precedence over the majority,” he said.
A number of other counties around the country have received the same FFRF letter as Walton County, including Stone County in Missouri, which BizPac Review reported on in July.
“There has been no better time than now to proudly display our National Motto!” Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader posted on social media at the time.
FFRF co-president Dan Barker told The Blaze he’s unsure what the atheist group will do next, but added that “we would love to sue over a case like this.”
