Trey Gowdy says State Dept. gives him Richard Gere press clippings – he’s not amused

Rep. Trey Gowdy is fuming over getting press clippings about celebrities, not documented facts, for his investigation into the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi  says that in answer to his requests for documentation, the State Department has instead deluged his panel with press clippings.

“It is still like pulling teeth to get the information,” the South Carolina Republican told CNN on Friday.

“But you know what we got last week? We got 3600 pages, half of which were press clippings, including articles about Richard Gere,” he said.

“So, if that is their idea of complying with congressional investigations, then we are going to be at this a long time.”

Gowdy appeared on “Face the Nation” two weeks ago and told CBS News host John Dickerson that he would call on Secretary of State John Kerry’s chief of staff, Jon Finer, to testify, and that he might go all the way up to the chief diplomat.

“If I don’t get satisfaction from that public interaction with his chief of staff, the next person to come explain to Congress why he has been so recalcitrant to turn over documents will be the secretary himself,” Gowdy said.

“I want to get this investigation over with, and he [Kerry] is the only thing standing between me and a completed investigation,” he added.

During the same interview, Gowdy said the State Department had been recalcitrant about handing over emails from the top officials at the time of the attack, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

“They haven’t given us emails for nine of the 10 senior aides that she [then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton] had,” Gowdy told Dickerson. “It’s been over a year, and we don’t have a single scrap of paper from nine of the 10.”
