The host of HBO’s “Real Time” is a card-carrying, Barack Obama-loving liberal, but when it comes to Islamist terror he’s willing to say things few of his fellow travelers even dare to think.
And Bill Maher’s performance on Friday was no different, as panelists got into a heated discussion over the Garland, Texas, shootings at the Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest that could have been mass murder, but instead left only two Islamists dead.
Both Maher, who’s an outspoken critic of radical Islam, and ESPN’s Will Cain, held their ground that free speech had to prevail.
Although Maher considered Pamela Geller, who co-hosted the event, as “kind of a loon,” he added “This is America. Do we not have the right to draw whatever we want?”
MSNBC’s Alex Wagner wasn’t too sure about taking an absolutist position on the freedom of speech.
“Isn’t the whole point of free speech not to judge people?” she asked.
Cain shot back, “When someone’s position is ‘If you offend me, I will kill you,’ it becomes virtuous to offend that person. You need to offend that person,” he emphasized. “You need to shock them out of their horrible position.”
“Listen to your language,” former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee put in. “You’re talking about hatred.”
Earlier in the segment, Chafee referred to himself as “a civil libertarian all the way.”
Well, maybe not all the way.
Maher noted that Garland’s population includes a large number of Muslims, none of whom came out to even silently protest the event.
“Why don’t we get on the side of those Muslims?” Maher asked. “The ones who want to live in the 21st century, instead of making excuses for the ones who want to live in seventh.”
After the episode aired, people commented on social media.
@WashTimes Just now I threw up a little because I’m agreeing with Maher.
