A Baltimore police sergeant warned in a memo to his superiors that “it’s about to get ugly,” because officers are “now being challenged in the street.”
Sgt. Lennardo Bailey’s memo informed the “Eastern Command Staff,” according to Buzzfeed News:
I have been to five calls today and three of those five calls for service; I have been challenged to a fight. Some of them I blew off but one of them almost got ugly. I don’t want anybody to say that I did not tell them what is going on. This is no intel this is really what’s going on the street. This is my formal notification. It is about to get ugly.
Police continued to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew in Baltimore as celebrations erupted over new that six police officers had been charged in the death of Freddie Gray, whose spine was snapped while in police custody. After some protesters confronted police, 53 people were detained, including 15 who violated curfew, CNN reported.
To keep officers safe, Baltimore Police Department’s chief of patrol commanded via a text message that every patrol car have two officers, according to Buzzfeed, saying, “2 OFFICERS PER CAR.. DOUBLE UP ALL PATROL CARS.”
As some seemed intent on challenging police authority in the wake of Baltimore’s riots, the National Guard’s tried to restore some modicum of peace to the streets. Twitter users posted serveral pictures and video:
