Actor Robert Downey Jr. endured a cringe-inducing interview on Wednesday until walking off the set after being pressured about his political affiliation.
Britain’s Channel 4 News interviewer, Krishnan Guru-Murthy started with some light chitchat about Downey’s upcoming film, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” – which Downey was there to promote – before trying to steer the conversation in another direction.
Guru-Murthy awkwardly brought up a 2008 New York Times interview where Downey rebuked liberalism after having served prison time for his troubled past.
Downey had told the N.Y. Times:
“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t.
“I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.”
But Downey wasn’t at the British interview to talk politics and tried to guide Guru-Murthy back in the right direction.
“The funny thing is, and I appreciate your point of view, things that you said five, seven years ago or things you said in an interview that made sense to you at the time, I could pick that apart for two hours and be no closer to the truth than I’d be giving you [in] some half-ass answer right now,” Downey said.

Not to be dissuaded Guru-Murthy doubled down.
“Does that mean you’re not a liberal or that you come out of prison not being a liberal?” he asked.
Downey became a bit agitated and asked, “Um, are we promoting a movie?”
“I’m certainly not going to backpedal on anything I’ve said,” Downey continued.
“Actually, I wouldn’t say that I am a Republican, a liberal, or a Democrat. I think when I was talking to the person who was doing the interview that day, that just happened to be my opinion.
“That’s the nice thing, is you can have opinions and they kind of change of flow,” he said.
Downey wasn’t going to let the interviewer pin him down literally or figuratively.
After a few more rambling questions, Downey and his crew got up and walked out – exit stage right.
