In an interview that aired Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week,” Laura Bush discussed Bush family politics and the role of foreign aid with ABC White House correspondent Jonathan Karl.

The former first lady had just been recognized for her work helping girls and women in Africa and the Middle East.

At about two minutes, 40 seconds into the interview, Karl swung the conversation over to her mother-in-law’s famous statement about there having been “enough Bushes” in the White House.

“I was shocked,” she said, and then laughed. She assured Karl that she never told Barbara Bush that she disagreed with the assessment.

“No, believe me,” she said, but admitted that the remark prompted some “interesting conversation” among other family members, adding, “but no one would tell Bar that.”

Since then, Barbara Bush has taken back that statement and said she would welcome a Jeb Bush presidency.
