Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul slammed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s “grand hypocrisy” of professing to be a champion for women’s issues while accepting huge donations from Middle Eastern countries that treat women as second-class citizens.
“I think the thing is about the Clintons is that there’s a certain sense that they think they’re above the law,” the senator from Kentucky told NBC News political director Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” Sunday.
In an interview that was less contentious than some he had earlier this week, Paul told Todd that it was hypocritical for Clinton to claim to be engaged in a “war on women” at the same time the Clinton Foundation accepts enormous cash donations from countries like Saudi Arabia.
“Hillary Clinton has taken money from countries that rape victims are publicly lashed,” he said, referring to a Saudi woman who was whipped after being gang raped by seven men. “We should be boycotting, voluntarily boycotting a country, not buying stuff from a country that does that to women,” he added.
Rather than severing alliances with Saudi Arabia, Paul suggested a “voluntary boycott” of the country.
“I would expect Hillary Clinton, if she believes in women’s rights, she should be calling for a boycott of Saudi Arabia. Instead, she’s accepting tens of millions of dollars,” he said. “And I think it looks unseemly. And there’s going to be some explaining she’s going to have to come up with.”
Clinton said she would announce her own presidential candidacy Sunday, but the official word was inexplicably delayed. The whole process has been rocky, even Democrats have to admit.
Earlier on the same program, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who served as Clinton’s campaign manager for her 2000 senatorial race, said he wasn’t yet ready to endorse her presidential bid.
Also, a source sent The Weekly Standard photos of anti-Clinton posters that have appeared in Brooklyn, the location of her campaign headquarters.
Finally, her announcement was heralded by a scathing New York Post headline:

All in all, not a very auspicious beginning for a presidential campaign.
