Three students at Highland Oaks Middle School in Memphis Tenn., were suspended for re-posting their teacher’s mugshot to Instagram.
Eighth-grade teacher Tiffany Jackson was arrested for driving on a suspended license, and it didn’t take long for her students to find out.

School administrators justified the suspensions saying the students violated a policy that incorporates “inappropriate use of electronic media.”
“Inappropriate use” apparently means whatever school administrators find uncomfortable, regardless of whether it involves public records.
It’s not surprising that the mugshot spread like wild-fire through the eighth-graders’ social media accounts Friday, WNC News reported.
The punishment, however, was overturned after Shanna Richardson called local WMC Action News 5.

Richardson told reporters she wanted to know why her son and two others were singled-out for suspension when many more students were involved. She added that the mugshot was a matter of public record and wondered how that could violate the school’s policy.
“My son went to her and talked to her make her feel better, and explained how he deleted it,” Richardson said. “He still got punished and that’s what makes me upset,” Richardson said.
“It’s public information, put it that way. You can see it on social media or you can see it in a magazine.”
And now, you can see it on hundreds of student Instagram accounts – it must be a long week for teacher Tiffany Jackson.
What do you think? Should students be punished for re-posting public information about their teachers?
