Community packs public hearing to save Bible studies in public classrooms

Residents of a North Carolina county turned out in force last week to defend privately funded Bible classes in their public schools.

And it looks they’ve been successful – at least for now.

biblestudy1012According to WCNC, the NBC affiliate in Charlotte, the residents packed a Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education meeting to convince the board they stood firmly behind Bible classes in the district that are paid for by private funds but use public school classrooms and take place during school hours.

During Thursday’s standing-room-only, speaker after speaker extolled the benefits of the classes, which have been attacked by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation as an unconstitutional imposition of religion.

Claiming it had received a complaint from a concerned family, the FFR demanded the classes be halted, WCNC reported.

That won’t happen if the speakers at Thursday’s meeting have anything to say about it – and they had plenty.

Check out the video here.

It’s worth stressing here that, according to WCNC, the classes are entirely voluntary. If parents don’t want their children to attend, the choice is theirs.

As to the gentleman who told WCNC he would have no problem with the classes if they included the Quran or the Torah, he and any who agree with him are surely free to find – and pay for — a person willing and able to teach such a class.

The Freedom From Religion folks probably won’t be kicking in any contributions, though.
