Donald Trump drew boos at a tea party rally in New Hampshire on Saturday. The target of the audience’s wrath: Jeb Bush and his stance on immigration.
Mexico is taking lots of jobs from the United States, Trump said, telling the Freedom Summit gathering that some Mexican immigrants are productive and need to be dealt with accordingly. The bad apples, though, need to be booted out.
“You know, I heard Jeb Bush the other day,” he said, as the audience groaned. “He was talking about people that come into this country illegally, [saying] ‘they do it for love.’ And I said, ‘Say it again.’ I didn’t get it.”
The audience booed loudly.
Trump heard of people coming to America for money or other reasons, but love was a new one, he said, criticizing Bush’s comments on Fox News last week that people cross the border to keep their families intact.
“Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony,” Bush told Fox News. “It’s an act of love.”
Saturday’s event was organized by Americans for Prosperity and Citizens United, attracting conservatives and tea party members from across New Hampshire, according to the Washington Post. Potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates also spoke, including Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky.
