Jeb Bush tells Fox News illegal immigration ‘not a felony, it’s an act of love’

bush-loveIn an interview broadcast Sunday on “America’s News HQ” on the Fox News Channel, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said immigrants who come to America illegally to provide for their family do so out of “an act of love” and “it shouldn’t rile people up.”

Bush was attending the 25th anniversary celebration of his father’s inauguration at George H.W. Bush’s presidential library when he spoke with host Shannon Bream, who asked about immigration, according to The Washington Post.

Describing the Senate bill on immigration reform passed last year as a “good effort,” Bush said establishing the rule of law will “restore people’ confidence,” pointing to immigrants who overstay their visas as an example.

But the potential 2016 presidential contender suggested some who come here illegally should be treated differently.

“There are means by which we can control our border better than we have. And there should be penalties for breaking the law,” Bush said. “But the way I look at this — and I’m going to say this, and it’ll be on tape and so be it. The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally, they come to our country because their families — the dad who loved their children — was worried that their children didn’t have food on the table. And they wanted to make sure their family was intact, and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work to be able to provide for their family. Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love.”

It’s an act of commitment to your family,” he added. “I honestly think that that is a different kind of crime that there should be a price paid, but it shouldn’t rile people up that people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families…. I think we need to get beyond the harsh political rhetoric to a better place.”

As for whether he will run for president in 2016 or not, Bush said he will decide by the end of this year, the Post reported.
