Rand Paul gets standing ovation from extremely unlikely crowd

Perhaps it was because he called the overly-invasive NSA to task or perhaps it was because he knocked his own party, but GOP Senator Rand Paul received standing ovation after standing ovation at the least likely of all places, the Berkeley campus of the University of California, according to reports.

Ever a bastion of the far left, the youthful audience enthusiastically applauded the Kentucky senator on Wednesday when he denounced government surveillance of its own citizens and its collection of megadata. “If you own a cell phone, you are under surveillance,” he warned.

Paul called for “a select committee styled after the Church Committee that investigated the abuses of power of the intelligence community in the 70s. It should…investigate and reform those who spy on us in the name of protecting us,” reported the Daily Caller.

He also captured the Berkeley fancy when he compared the Republican Party establishment to the old Domino’s Pizza commercial.

“Remember when they candidly said we know our product’s bad so we’re revamping it, when they admitted their crust was bad? Think Republican Party . . . admit it, okay. Bad crust . . .  we need a different kind of party,” Paul admonished, according to CNN’s video.

Whether he can deliver is another question, but for a Republican presidential aspirant to sparkle on the Berkeley campus is no small achievement, with no small ramification.
