George Will: Except for Nixon, has there been a worse second term?

Syndicated columnist and Fox News personality George Will cut right to the quick of Democrats’ worst nightmare on “Fox News Sunday,” with a one-question post-mortem on President Obama’s second term to date:

“Has there ever – with the exception of Richard Nixon in 1973 – been a worse first year of a second term?”

sonnyandcher1110It’s a question that will make libs squirm, not least because it evokes the bogeyman they’ve been chasing since their glory days of the Watergate investigation. But the country had problems that weren’t really Nixon’s fault in 1972: Arab terrorists carrying guns at the Munich Olympics; Arab terrorists running countries with the OPEC oil embargo; “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.”

President Obama’s problems are of his own dyed-in-the-wool Democratic designs.

“The Pew survey this week has approval of his performance on health care – health care, his signature issue — disapproval 59 percent,” Will said. “That’s a little bit less than the 60 percent disapproval on immigration and 65 percent on the economy.”

Obamacare, which was sold as the greatest thing since the 21st Amendment, is turning out even worse than the disaster conservatives predicted. Immigration reform, which U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York called the great “civil rights” movement of the year, is foundering. A better-than-expected October jobs report on Friday isn’t going to change the minds of millions.

Not even die-hard Dems can think this is going well, and next November is looking awfully close for senators who gambled their political careers on Obama actually coming through with something worthwhile.

On the bright side for libs, Bill Clinton was having a pretty rough time after his first year in office, but he – and the country – was saved by the Republican revolution that took over both houses of Congress and sparked the economic dynamo of the late 1990s.

What the historically minded Obama-bots should really be praying for is a Republican Senate in 2014.

There’s one big risk to that, of course, but Democrats should relax. How often does a second-term president get impeached?
