“Fox and Friends” hosts hit the nail on the head Tuesday morning when they blasted the supposedly unbiased media for its predictably knee-jerk reaction to the government shutdown with blame for Republicans.
Exhibit A: The amateurishly liberal New York Daily News, which adorned its tabloid cover with an image of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in the chair of the Lincoln Memorial. In the corner of the page is an upside-down American flag.
The headline: “House of Turds.”
(It’s supposed to be a play on the Netflix political series “House of Cards.” It’s probably supposed to be funny, too. We report, you decide.)
“That is such an inappropriate headline,” host Brian Kilmeade said. “How do they get away with that?”
“That’s the mainstream media,” co-host Steve Doocy answered. “Just like last time, just like this time … It’s the Republicans to blame.”
How do they get away with it? Because no one expects any different, and no one expects any better.
But as Doocy pointed out, some media observers are highlighting the blatantly partisan coverage.
Doocy played a clip from Fox’s Brit Hume’s broadcast Monday night, where Hume first ran down the depressingly biased tone of the shutdown coverage, and noted that even a Wall Street Journal article reported that the “simplest path to avoiding a shutdown would be for the House to immediately pass the Senate funding bill.”
“It would be just as simple,” Hume observed, “for the [Democratic] Senate to pass the House bill and send it to the president for him to sign, but some scenarios don’t occur to most journalists because they consider it unrealistic to expect the president and his party to compromise.”
Considering the character of the president – petty, narcissistic, thin-skinned – and the nature of his party – doctrinaire, authoritarian and essentially tyrannical – it probably is unrealistic to expect them to compromise.
And considering the nature of the mainstream media — liberal, self-satisfied and remarkably ignorant — it’s probably just as unrealistic to expect them to give the American public anything like an honest appraisal of the political forces at work in the current impasse.
But they’re not the last word anymore. The last government shutdown ended in January, 1996 – in a different world. Fox News wasn’t in operation yet, the Internet was still a novelty, and social media as it’s known today simply didn’t exist.
Seventeen years ago, the mainstream media was essentially still the “only” media. It’s not anymore.
And they’re not getting away with it anymore.
