After the network pundits weighed in on President Obama’s address on Syria Tuesday night, comedian Jon Stewart threw in his own two cents. And it wasn’t pretty — at least not for the president and Secretary of State John Kerry. The way he looked at it, their own incompetence led us both in and out of Syria.
He began by reminding his audience how we got embroiled in this mess — an offhand remark the president had made about a Syrian red line during his 2012 re-election campaign. It was an “ill-thought out hypothetical,” in Stewart’s words.
It was also “the campaign promise Obama’s decided to keep!” he added.
And with that, the die was cast. When Syria apparently used chemical weapons, the president had the option of following through with his threat or looking weak, so in back-to-back interviews “on six separate networks, he decided to make his case for intervention, movie junket style.”
Stewart noted that if a a stupid remark to a hypothetical got us into the Syrian “pickle,” perhaps “an equal and opposite ill-thought-out hypothetical statement” could get us out.
Enter Kerry, the second half of the bumbling, not-so-dynamic “Dumb and Dumber” duo, described by Stewart as a “Magoo-esque accidental genius” who was somehow able to “bumble-f**k” his way into an answer to the Syrian mess.
To avert American intervention, Bashar al-Assad “could turn over every bit of his chemical weapons to the international community,” Kerry said in an off-hand, not-meant-to-be-taken-seriously statement at a press conference.
Surprise! “Magoo, you’ve done it again!” shouted Stewart. “Syria is taking him up on his dickish offer!”
Stewart closed by bashing the media, especially Fox News, for its criticism of Syria’s offer to turn over its weapons, and the administration’s acceptance.
Stewart came to his senses on Obama — give him time and he’ll do the same with Fox.
