U.S. officials confirmed that the United States and Mexico are considering a joint effort to strengthen border security with an elaborate three-tier system — along Mexico’s southern border separating it from Guatemala and Belize.
The scheme would call for U.S. funding and technical support to create a security system extending up to 140 miles north of Mexico’s southern border. The system would employ electronic sensors and intelligence-gathering to halt human and drug trafficking that eventually makes its way to .the United States, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
This news comes at a time when immigration reform measures are being considered in the House, and security of our own southern border is very much a part of that debate.
The Free Beacon noted:
According to the officials who discussed the U.S.-Mexican talks on condition of anonymity, the Mexican government proposed setting up three security cordons using electronic sensors and other security measures along the southern Mexican border, along a line some 20 miles from the southern border, and along a third security line about 140 miles from the southern Mexican territorial line.
When contacted by the Free Beacon, officials from the Mexican Embassy declined to comment. The White House also declined, and referred all questions to the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, both of which also declined to comment.
However, U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R., Texas, had plenty to say.
“We need to take care of the United States first when it comes to border security,” he told the Free Beacon. “The United States seems to be very concerned about protecting the border of other nations and needs to be more concerned about protecting our own border.”
“We should be spending funds on border security and national security in the United States,” he said, noting that we’re supposed to be in a state of fiscal austerity.
“Mexico has a problem, obviously, but it is their responsibility to protect the sovereignty of their borders and it is our responsibility to protect the sovereignty of our border,” he said.
Poe is a senior member of the House Homeland Security subcommittee on immigration.
A U.S. official who is critical of the program said that the talks were reported inside the U.S. government recently and show “hypocrisy and disdain for American security.”
“The administration appears more concerned about the security of Mexico’s southern border than defending our southern border,” the official said.
