Fed up with the controversy over IRS scrutiny of conservative groups and money spent on spurious training sessions, House Republicans are threatening to cut $3 billion from the agency’s budget, The Hill reported Tuesday.
The cuts are part of a 2014 spending bill released by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky.
They include measures aimed at eliminating spending on embarrassments like the “Star Trek” parody IRS employees and administrators made during a “training” conference in California in 2010 as well as striking at the individual mandate that is at the heart of the Obamacare train wreck.
All told, the cuts would reduce the IRS budget from $12 billion this year to $9 billion next year — $4 billion below the amount requested by President Obama, The Hill reported.
It’s the “power of the purse” sending a very political message.
“The public is feeling a growing sense of distrust of what this administration and what Washington is doing,” Majority Leader and No. 2 House Republican Eric Cantor, R-Va., told reporters at a news conference, according to The Hill.
“And that’s why we in the House this month will be taking up a package of bills to stop this government abuse and put the American people first.”
According to The Hill, other measures House Republicans are pushing are the re-introduction of the REINS Act (Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny), which gives Congress the ultimate authority over regulations that impose onerous burdens on the economy, and a limitation on the ability of IRS employees to implement the individual mandate – that is, the tax Obamacare would impose on those who do not have health insurance after Jan. 1.
