Rep. Michele Bachmann’s surprise video announcement

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., announced in a video posted to her website early Wednesday morning that “after a good deal of thought and deliberation,” she will not seek a fifth term representing Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional district.

“The law limits anyone from serving as president of the United States for any more than 8 years,” she said in the video. “And in my opinion, well 8 years is also long enough for an individual to serve as a representative for a specific congressional district.”

Bachmann asserted her decision was neither influenced by “concerns about being… re-elected to Congress,” nor controversy recently associated with her 2012 presidential bid.

With regards to the latter, The Daily Beast reported in March that former Bachmann campaign staffer Peter Waldron had “been interviewed by investigators” from the Office of Congressional Ethics. The investigation centered on an alleged “improper transfer of funds and under-the-table payments actions by Bachmann’s presidential campaign,” the Beast reported.

Bachmann closed by noting that she will “continue to fight for public policy that is first and foremost in the best interest of the citizens of the United States at large,” then thanked her husband, family, supporters and constituents. “And I want to thank God for His blessings on the United States of America.”
