Ruth’s Chris gets razzed by Chili’s in viral dress code feud

A restaurant dress code debate went viral after Chili’s jabbed Ruth’s Chris Steak House for its “business casual” policy.

The upscale steakhouse’s strict dress code, which requires diners to be dressed in “proper attire,” caught the attention of Chili’s, which responded in a social media post declaring that “the only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed.”

The casual dining chain set off a wave of reactions on X, where it has garnered over one million views, and its account page interacted with users with many tongue-in-cheek responses.

Darden Restaurants, which operates Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and The Capital Grille, also owns Ruth’s Chris and recently doubled down on the dress code for diners coming to the restaurant.

While the chain claims on its website that it provides a “comfortable, family friendly and welcoming atmosphere,” diners are asked not to wear “Clothing with offensive graphics or language” or “Exposed undergarments, cut-off shorts and tank tops.” In addition, hats should be removed upon entering, and if guests insist on keeping hats and caps on, or wearing team jerseys, they should sit in the bar or patio areas as opposed to the main dining spaces.

The strict dress code has been part of Ruth’s Chris Steak House policy, but has gained new attention likely due to a reinforcement of the guidelines. And with the snappy post by Chili’s, the stage was set on social media for lively debates on the topic. Many X users noted that the two restaurants offer distinct dining experiences and seemed to have no problem with a dress code.

Some X users were clearly Team Chili’s.

“Ruth’s Chris isn’t fine dining, it’s like one step up from Outback,” one X user commented. “This is going to make a lot of people not go.”
