‘FREE TINA!’ Trump demands Tina Peters be released from Colorado prison

President Donald Trump is calling for Tina Peters, a former election worker, to be released.

Peters, 70, is currently serving a 9-year prison term “following her August 2024 conviction on seven charges, including four felonies, related to a 2021 security breach of the county’s voting systems as she sought evidence to support Trump’s claims that his loss to former President Joe Biden was due to voter fraud,” according to Fox News. The president is putting pressure on Colorado Governor Jared Polis to release the woman.

On Wednesday, Trump called for her release in a Truth Social post:

“FREE TINA PETERS, A 73-YEAR-OLD WOMAN, WITH CANCER, GIVEN A NINE YEAR DEATH SENTENCE IN A COLORADO PRISON BY A DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR, JARED POLIS, AND A CORRUPT POLITICAL MACHINE, FOR EXPOSING FRAUD BY THE DEMOCRATS DURING THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. AGAIN, FREE TINA!” Trump wrote.

He made a follow-up post on Friday:

“The Great State of Colorado, and a pathetic RINO District Attorney, together with the Radical Left Governor, gave a wonderful woman named Tina Peters, a 73-year-old Gold Star Mom, who has cancer, nine years in prison because, as a Republican Voting Official, she went after the Democrats for cheating in the 2020 Presidential Election. So, she went after them for cheating, and these SLEAZEBAGS put her in jail. FREE TINA! President DJT,” he demanded.

Polis spoke about the case, specifically noting that a former state senator got probation for the same crime that landed Peters behind bars for almost a decade.

“Last week, former State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis was sentenced to probation and community service after being convicted of four felonies including Attempt to Influence a Public Official. She made a horrible mistake, and she was wrong. I hope she learns from this and can rebuild her life. As someone who has known Sonya as a friend for many years, on a personal level I was glad to hear she isn’t going to prison which is a hard place for anyone, no less a retired 68-year old pharmacist,” he wrote. “But it is not lost on me that she was convicted of the exact same felony charge as Tina Peters — attempting to influence a public official — and yet Tina Peters, as a non-violent first time offender got a nine year sentence. Justice in Colorado and America needs to be applied evenly, you never know when you might need to depend on the rule of law. This is the context I am using as I consider cases like this that have sentencing disparities, which is why I have extended the deadline for clemency applications until April 3rd. I will be making decisions on these cases throughout the remainder of my governorship.”
