Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated that President Donald Trump has not yet committed any acts worthy of impeachment during his second term in a Monday episode of USA Today’s “The Excerpt.”
House Democrats successfully impeached Trump twice in his first term during Pelosi’s speakership. On the podcast, USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page sought to clarify Pelosi’s position on whether Democrats should impeach Trump again if they regain control of the House.

“[J]ust to make sure I understand you, [impeachment] should not be the agenda of Democrats for this last two years,” Page said.
“No, I mean unless he — if he crosses the border again. But that’s not an incidental thing you say — ‘We’re going to do that.’ No, there has to be cause. There has to be reason. We had review. This was a very serious historic thing,” Pelosi responded. “And our founders knew that there could be a rogue president. And that’s why they put impeachment in the Constitution. They didn’t know there’d be a rogue president at the same time a rogue Senate that didn’t have the courage to do the right thing. It was bipartisan in the Senate, but it wasn’t enough.”
Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump on Dec. 18, 2019, during Pelosi’s speakership for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after Pelosi’s early reluctance. The impeachment was related to a scandal regarding Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — specifically whether the president asked him to investigate then-former Vice President Joe Biden in exchange for U.S. military aid.
The House of Representatives under Pelosi then voted to impeach Trump on Jan. 13, 2021, for “incitement of insurrection” over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green forced a vote on Thursday on a resolution to impeach Trump, including an article pertaining to the president’s alleged incitement of violence against the six lawmakers in his party who urged service members to disobey illegal orders. The articles were overwhelmingly tabled in a 237 to 140 vote, with 47 Democrats voting “present.”
Trump had posted on Truth Social that the six Democratic lawmakers could have committed a crime “punishable by death.” However, he subsequently clarified on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” that he was not threatening the lawmakers’ lives.
Green has unsuccessfully filed several articles of impeachment against Trump during his second term.
Moreover, House Democratic leadership published a statement on Thursday distancing themselves from Green’s impeachment efforts. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his leadership team argued that impeachment generally mandates a rigorous investigation.
