Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett told MS NOW host Chris Hayes Tuesday that Democratic Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani of New York City’s election win was a sign that she could flip Texas.
Crockett announced her candidacy for the Senate seat held by Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas on Tuesday, prompting former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred of Texas to run for a House seat instead. Crockett highlighted Mamdani’s labeling of President Donald Trump as a “fascist” when she laid out her logic.
“Mamdani has not backed down whatsoever from his rhetoric against the president in the Oval Office. He stood — he stood there, and he said what he said about him being a fascist, yet he was able to win those voters,” Crockett claimed. “So Democrats that believe the only way that you can win is by being soft and sounding like a Republican, that is not true. What people are looking for are people that are tough and are fighters and are going to fight for them.”
WATCH:
Mamdani defeated former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York and Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa on Nov. 4 in the race to replace outgoing independent Mayor Eric Adams. Mamdani campaigned on left-wing policies, including establishing government-run grocery stores, free child care, and free use of transit buses, telling voters that increased taxes on predominantly white and wealthy neighborhoods would fund those programs.
Crockett faced criticism over making a false allegation that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin received political donations from registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during the debate on the floor of the House of Representatives on legislation to force the Trump administration to release files pertaining to Epstein.
The Daily Caller News Foundation took less than ten minutes to confirm that the donation to Zeldin took place in April 2020, months after the disgraced financier apparently committed suicide in his Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial after he was arrested in 2019, and that the Epstein in question was a self-employed physician.
Crockett has a history of making inflammatory statements, recently comparing United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “slave patrols,” defending comparisons of Trump to Hitler on a Sept. 12 appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” claiming Trump’s supporters were mentally ill, and mocking Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who uses a wheelchair.
Crockett also labeled Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot Sept. 10 while taking part in a “Prove Me Wrong” event at Utah Valley University, a “Confederate,” while bemoaning the fact only two white Democratic members of the House of Representatives voted against a resolution to condemn Kirk’s assassination while doubling down on comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler.
