Special counsel Jack Smith is launching a new law firm with attorneys who helped him target President Donald Trump, according to several reports.
The new firm will include former prosecutors Thomas Windom and David Harbach, as well as former top investigator for the House Jan. 6 committee Timothy Heaphy, the New York Times first reported.
Windom worked on Smith’s team to prosecute the 2020 election case against Trump, while Harbach worked on the classified documents case. The firm will emphasize trial work and investigations, according to Bloomberg Law.
Two other top prosecutors on Smith’s team, Molly Gaston and J.P. Cooney, launched a firm in October. Their firm’s priorities include helping state and local governments enforce “public corruption” laws, criminal defense and supporting clients subject to congressional investigations, according to their website.
Both Smith and Windom are facing pressure from Republican members of Congress, who are probing the Arctic Frost investigation that led to Trump’s indictment.
Heaphy and Smith’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment.
House Judiciary Committee Republicans issued a subpoena for Smith to provide closed-door testimony on Dec. 17. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced plans Monday to hold hearings in 2026 on Arctic Frost.
“Arctic Frost was a runaway train that swept up information from hundreds of innocent people simply because of their political affiliation. Congress and the American people want answers, and sunshine is the best disinfectant,” Grassley said in a Monday statement. “The Senate Judiciary Committee is leading this investigation to find out exactly what went wrong, so that bad actors can be held accountable and this sort of political witch hunt never happens again. Transparency brings accountability.”
House Republicans referred Windom to the DOJ for prosecution in November for allegedly obstructing the committee’s investigation into Smith’s office. Windom declined to answer almost all questions posed during his deposition with the committee.
