The Trump administration released its National Security Strategy late on Thursday, featuring an energy policy that sharply diverges from the Biden-era climate agenda.
President Donald Trump’s defense strategy includes ramping up baseload power sources like oil, gas and nuclear while detaching from the Middle East. While the Biden administration’s October 2022 National Security Strategy mentioned climate 63 times, the Trump-era defense plan only mentioned it once to note that America is condemning Europe’s “disastrous” climate change policy.
“We reject the disastrous ‘climate change’ and ‘Net Zero’ ideologies that have so greatly harmed Europe, threaten the United States, and subsidize our adversaries,” the plan states. “Restoring American energy dominance (in oil, gas, coal, and nuclear) and reshoring the necessary key energy components is a top strategic priority. Cheap and abundant energy will produce well-paying jobs in the United States, reduce costs for American consumers and businesses, fuel reindustrialization, and help maintain our advantage in cutting-edge technologies such as AI. Former President Joe Biden’s national security energy plans aimed to combat climate change and decouple from Russian oil and gas. However, the plan ignored the American oil and gas industry as Biden burdened the sector with crippling regulations.
“We have also experienced a global energy crisis driven by Russia’s weaponization of the oil and gas supplies it controls, exacerbated by OPEC’s management of its own supply. This circumstance underscores the need for an accelerated, just, and responsible global energy transition,” the 2022 plan states. The strategy alluded to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), noting that “we are also focused on implementing the most significant piece of climate legislation in our nation’s history, to bring innovative energy technologies to scale as quickly as possible.”
Congressional Republicans and Trump have moved to slash and phase out wind and solar tax credits provided through the IRA and the Trump administration has emphasized boosting reliable sources like coal and nuclear. Under the IRA, the Biden administration incentivized intermittent energy sources, awarded billions of dollars to coalitions financing green projects laden with Democratic Party insiders and fixed the oil and gas sector with burdensome fees, several energy experts previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
